What are these floor board inserts for? Do they just strengthin up the floor by your feet if its rusty? I'v never seen or heard of them before.

Looks like a form of the Catch-All floor mats. I did away with my carpet all together and just put vinyl floor in, now I have NO worries about the floor getting ruined
