I'm about to upgrade the front brakes on my '98 to the 12 inch rotors from a SportTrac. Problem is, there are no SportTracs in my local boneyard to extract the needed spindles from. However, there are plenty of '01+ Sports and I heard they might be the same but no definitive info. 4x4 chassis by the way. Can anyone confirm this before I head to the yard?

I think you need the spindles off the sport track to go with the brake assemblies.

edit...oops
I should read, and digest whats said before typing.
I don't think the sports have larger front disks.

Wow, Thank you.

I think i will be looking for some newer sport/sport track spindles also. Be a nice brake upgrade.

Thanks, guess I wasn't searching the right places. Greatly appreciated.

Looks like I need to find some parts.

I'd like to confirm the accuracy of the info in the above links posted by swshawaii. I pulled spindles from an '02 Sport. Hub assemblies and caliper brackets were the same as my '98. I used Sport rotors(obviously), pads and hardware. I reused my '98 calipers. Everything bolted up perfectly and is working great. I doubt factory 15" wheels will fit with this setup. My 15x8 steel Cragars with 4" backspacing BARELY cleared the calipers. Thanks again for the information.

Brakes

So....
2002 Sport Track Spindles
2002 Rotors and Pads
What Hardware did you need off 2002?
How does it stop now?

:dunno:Why do I come up different calipers from a 2nd gen and 01 sport trac? Has anyone used the spindles and everything on a 2nd gen? Also thought the spindles were different.I know on the 2wd you use 95-98 spindles, calipers, pads, bearings and 01+ rotors and then make a bracket to move the caliper up to fit the 12"rotors

And is it really worth going from a 11.25" rotor to a 12"?? Sounds like more trouble than its worth?

Edit it appears the st 4wd is 11.85" and the 2wd is 12".this to me is no upgrade...11.25" to 11.85" isn't even worth more breaking out the tool box.

Sport = 2 Door. The 2002-05 ST front brakes should be interchangeable.

The 01-03 Sport has EXACTLY the same front end as the 2001-2005 Sport Trac .....NO difference. They are totally different from the regular 4-door Explorer.

I agree with JD. I did type up a long message explaining the physics, mechanics, and well the reasons it's not worth doing the swap. However I figure you won't read or care.
So this is what you should do;
Bleed the brakes really good, get out all the old fluid
Instal these http://ebcbrakes.com/product/extra-duty-light-truck-jeep-and-suv-brake-pads/
And these http://ebcbrakes.com/product/grooved-disc/

If you want a even better feel, rebuild the calipers, spray some wd40 on the brake pedal, don't drive with shoes, and braided hoses.
More than you'll ever want/need from the brakes on an explorer

You have a 1998 4wd mountaineer right ?
Did you get parts from 2002 4wd SPORTTRACK or just a sport(2door) to put on your explorer? I am thinking you meant SPORTTRACK.
So then 2002 SPORTTRACK spindles, rotors, pads and hardware(what hardware?)
Also you stated that the caliper brackets and calipers from your 98 bolt right on. So no adaptor bracket needed for caliper with 12 inch rotors correct?

What's the point of doing this? Am I missing something? Is it worth doing all that work to go from what you have a 11.25" rotor to a 11.85" rotor?

Rotor sizes

Can someone comfirm are these the actual rotor sizes for a 4wd drive Explorer Sport(2door) and a 4wd SPORTTRACK(pickup back)?
(11.25 and 11.85)

Also, I am looking for facts not opinions, except for TBMounty's opinion of how his truck stops now.

Dont really care about feel of the brakes, I need more holding power because my truck creeps when I am standing the converter at 2000. I need to be able to stand it at 3000 without the truck creeping forward.

I was going by the link above that said 11.85" but It was wrong they are 12" same as the 2wd

Just a quick search yours 11.27"
http://m.summitracing.com/parts/ebc-gd7037

2001+st 4wd they are 12" still not worth the work, even if they were an inch bigger would only be a 1/2" more surface with same pad.you wouldn't feel a bit of difference. Get better pads and stainless lines or up your rear rotors to cobra 12"

Whenever I go ride the dirt bike, I usually bring flip flops when I go ride but you can't drive in those.

As for the brake not holding it currently, what have you done to them? I'ma guess they are bone stock.

If I was you, I'd try stronger brake pads first. http://ebcbrakes.com/product/yellowstuff-street-and-track-pads/

Also why do you need to upgrade the front brakes? You're trying to hold the gas and brake without doing a burnout right? That would mean stronger rear brakes. You could set the parking brake but that might effect your launch :D
