Looking for led tail lights for my 97 sport. Are there any companies that make them?

By LED, do you mean a full housing for it? Or do you just want bulbs? If it's bulbs, just search for them on eBay.

I was looking for the whole housing, are the led lights just plug and play or is there something that needs to be done to the wiring

Well, you have a 97, so you might be lucky.

The LED lights are all plug and play, they replace the stock bulb, however, some explorers have rapid flash when a light bulb is out.

So, if you turn your turn signal on with one bulb out, does it blink much faster than normal?

Usually explorer 98+ have it, and need to modify wiring for LEDs, however the 97 and older are a hit and miss. Some don't like LEDs, some do.

I haven't checked mine yet, but I feel like it won't mind LEDs.
