I have 165K on my X 94' Limited. I just bought it and have no recent service for trans. fluid change. I read the past posts about maybe not changing it since it might due more harm then good. What do you think?
Maybe just filter and 4 quarts? Thanks.

Just make sure you don't put another metal screen filter back in. There is an improved Microfelt filter that fits this transmission. New fluid will dislodge dirt in the tranny and the felt filter will catch it.

Do both

I can't imagine it doing more harm than good. It might reviel a hidden problem but I doubt it.

There is a difference between tranny service and fluid flush.

The former drops the pan replaces the filter and replaces the fluid in the pan, as you know.

The later replaces ALL the fluid including the fluid in the torque converter, as you also know.

I would do both.

Weren't you expierencing poor gas mileage?

After I switched to Amsoil oil and did a tranny flush with Amsoil ATF, my gas mileage jumped 2-3mpg and the throttle response seem much better, but that could be from the torque converter having fresh fluid.

I'm now getting 20mpg on the freeway @ 70 and 14.5mpg around town.

I was wondering about the tranny flush thing... . .. . Cant you drop the pan and remove the drain plug from the torque convertor to completely drain the transmission? I have heard from several mechanics that they do not trust the tranny flush.

DO NOT FLUSH!!! Flushes cause more problems than they solve on this board. Change the fluid and filter at regular service intervals (every 30K is what the manual recommends for sever duty). Just drop the pan, replace the filter, and replace the fluid lost from the pan. There are enough detergents in the fresh fluid that it will slowly and gradually remove any deposits that may have been forming if the previous owner neglected to service it. Regular maintenance is all that's needed. No flushing necessary.
