hey, i have a 96 explorer with a 5.0 and awd. I really want to change it over to 2wd but im not sure 100% what parts i can use. i recently did a new awd transmission in the truck, but now that i want to change to 2wd what output shaft and tailhousing do i need? (part numbers would be great) also what other parts can i pull from what other vehicles to change the front end over to a 2wd setup. im 18 and on a budget because this isnt my main play/fun car but would like to start a new project.

thanks, chris

also anyone have parts or know somewhere good online to purchase these parts from would be great.

you need the 2wd transmission output shaft. tailhousing, and driveshaft
then you need an entirely new front end without diff or cv axles, again from a 2wd Explorer

You are better off selling your AWD and buying a 2wd, seriously

What you should be doing is removing the AWD and installing 4wd :)

Yes, you would be better off putting in a 4406 transfer case and having selectable 4wd/2wd. Do a quick search for 4406 swap to find all that is involved and parts you will need.

I dunno about the 'it's easier to buy a 2WD' statement....

The Explorer Computer doesn't 'know' it's an AWD computer....There are no electrical issues that need be overcome with a AWD-to-2WD or 2WD-to-AWD conversion. It's purely mechanical.

It's a matter of pulling the trans, drivelines, and front axle....and swapping them out for their 2WD counterpart. This is a weekend project.

the correct a weekend project for some, in way over their head for others, guess we should always think about that before being so quick to say SELL SELL SELL LOL

but does anyone have lengths or part numbers, because i did a search on ebay and there different tailhousing and output shafts with little info and i dont know which one i need to buy. also is there anywhere online i can find all the parts to convert my truck.

You will have to go to Ford for part numbers. But you can go to a number of places online that can sell you the 2WD output shaft and extension housing for your Explorer. Many have good used ones. This should be easy to obtain. You do realize the trans has to be completely disassembled for this swap, right?

Ditto... The output shaft is the last thing out and first thing in when rebuilding the trans,,, It's not a matter of simply bolting it on with the extension housing...

yea i understand that it has to be disassembled. my fther and i have done numerous transmission and engine builds on the cars we restore.
