just bought a seat cover to protect the leather in the back of my 2002 eddie baer when my bulldogs ride along , its a heavy duty type cover that just sits on the seat and happens to have grommets in the top that line up perfectly w the headrest holes , it comes w straps to go around the headrests but i was thinking if i took the headrests off and slid back in through the grommets it would be alot better , is there a pin or button somewhere to hit enabeling them to be pulled out completely ? thanks

It's the button on the steel shaft that mounts it.. same as if you were adjusting it...
Make sure seat is positioned to allow headrest to fit out

this is on the rear seat not the front , its a 60 40 bench and i would think there would be a way to remove them esp for folding them down

Oh I see what you mean sorry I have the third row so all 7 headrests are same minus size

I had those seats and I never found a way to remove the headrest. They're the ones that pivot but don't adjust up and down?

Will was right...

It's a xls/XLT front seat differences and that rear seat doesn't have third row....

yes its an 02 ex no 3rd row and no buttons to push like the fronts , they adjust up an down and pivot but i see nothing to release them fully and remove them , i can pull them all the way up but wont come out

My bud is Otw over he has a 02 with same back seats ill let you know what I find

Good luck. I have the same seats and have never been able to take them out. I had to get rid of one of them for clearance and my only option was to remove the headrest pad and keep the metal frame in (which will not solve your problem, its a complete loop). If you figure out a way to remove them without surgury let me know!

On my 2005 the rear seat headrests are held in with a spring clip. With a small flat blade screwdriver you would dig under the plastic guide carefully, so as not to cut the seat (leather in my case). Look closely and on one side or the other you'll see the spring clip held onto the plastic guide. Pry it back a little and the headrest will pull right out. Don't pull it completely out if you want to use it again - just a little bit.

on my 06 there's no spring clip that i can see like clhitt mentioned on my rear seat headrest, but i did manage to get 'most' of the headrest off. i needed to do this %$^&# job because my rear seatbelt go behind the headrest somehow. :splat:

anyway, the 'leather' foam piece comes off (the back flap is tightly folded in but can come apart with some work) revealing the metal frame, etc.

then the plastic 'shell' is actually two halves held together with clips, so that comes off. then i removed the torx screws on either side to remove more pieces. at that point i was able to get the seatbelt over what was left (still wasn't easy). then i put the pieces back in reverse and all good...

well, almost, as the seatbelt doesn't extend now (seems locked). ugh.

anyway, maybe this will help someone.

yay, just unlocked the seatbelt - it was just ruffled and jammed at the top swinging guide - had to pull out the plastic cover, unjam, the carefully put the plastic piece back in place.

Solution

Sorry for dragging this post up from the grave but I figured that there is a lot of good info in it and I only wanted to add a link to a line drawing of the grommet and clip mentioned in a post a few up from this one:
http://www.justanswer.com/ford/0zcjq-remove-rear-headrests-2002-explorer.html

The clips are under the plastic grommet, inboard side of each headrest post. you have to pry and pull the hole cut in the seat cover over the ears that hold the clip and the clip itself before the clip can be removed.
