I have a 1997 Explorer that has developed a very bad vibration/rumble starting at around 35mph. The rumble is so loud at 40mph that you cannot hear the radio. I have removed the front driveshaft with no change. I have also rotated the tires with no change. The only thing that I have noticed that when I am on a right curve (like an freeway ramp), the vibration smooths out but reappears when I straighten out.
I was told by a mechanic that it is a bad front differential. I have purchased a used unit but before I try to replace, I thought I would inquire with the forum if it could be something else other than the differential. The truck has 168k miles but is otherwise in good shape.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
