Has anyone heard of, found, or experienced a solution to the Ford Explorer exhaust issue?

I too wouldn't be too worried about the exhaust ...

The fluid may actually protect the pipe for a while :)

Ok, so I buy a $50,000 truck and a faulty part dumping grease on an exhaust pipe causing smelly smoke is supposed to be ok??? Really? According to some I'm a complainer and this truck is supposed to be jacked up? I should just get used to it? Thanks Johnny Boy, but if this is expected I disagree.

Different people have different expectations which is perfectly natural. I think that you are within your rights to expect a replacement to bring it back to its original condition especially if the odour lingers. On the other hand, if the odour is gone and the dealer isn't willing to replace it, I personally would not have a problem leaving it as is if it were mine. The fact is that it's your vehicle and you should do what you feel is necessary.

Chill todd - u misread my intent (or I presented it improperly :) )

for sure the leak is bad, and should be addressed by ford with even a few free oil changes thrown in for the distractions...

but I don't think the exhaust is any worse for the wear,
heck - in one winter storm, your exhaust will be a mess anyway :)

and we KNOW you're too smart to have paid $50k for it !!!

Ok. I took a few deep breaths. Sorry for the rant and for calling you out JohnBoy. I just miss my car and wanted 5 more minutes of it being new instead of repaired. I did get x-plan pricing, but the bank will probably add to the cost!

I guess I am the next victim of this. We bought my wife a new 2013 Ex 2 weeks ago and it is already leaking. Wednesday I noticed a small spot, about 2" in diameter, on the garage floor where something was dripping. I didn't give much thought to it at this point. Yesterday morning my wife called me when she was dropping our son off at my mom's before heading to work and said that it smelled like something burning and there was smoke coming out from under the hood. She left it there at my mom's house and took my mom's vehicle to work. When I got off work yesterday afternoon, there was a larger spot underneath it where oil had been dripping, around 10-12" in diameter. It appears to be gear lube and is all over the bottom of the vehicle and exhaust. My dealership was already closed by this time but I will be calling as soon as they open.

This is rediculous. I have always been a GM guy and this is my first Ford. I have never had to take a GM vehicle in to be worked on when it was only 2 weeks old and had 1000 miles on it. I hope I didn't mess up buying this.

Hi jmcgriff19,

I want to bring this to the attention of your regional customer service manager so they can help. Send me a PM with your info (VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name) and I'll get to work on your case.

Thanks!

Crystal

To balance the scales a bit - I've had 10 to 20 ford's and 2 gm's plus triumph's, jeeps, audi's, etc....

All mfg's can have an oops, just like all of us can -
it's how they react to the oops moreso than the oops itself that's important to me.

In my case I lemon lawed both GM products due to insignificant issues like the lights going out while driving at night :)

but that's just one persons experience and humble opinion :) good luck on your repair !

Update

Ok, the dealer officially has my 1 week old X Sport with 300 miles on it. The cause of the stink? Blown PTU. It leaked the gear oil onto a pan next to it and dispersed the oil along one of the 2 exhaust pipes forward of the catalytic converter, causing the oil to smolder and create smoke (though I never saw any) in the engine compartment. The stink was then assumedly brought in to the cabin from the rear where others needed TSB addressed, or through the front intake when we stopped (the cabin filter would not be able to stop odors). The service team at South Bay Ford in Los Angeles have been awesome. Great facility, attentive service manager that crawled under the car after I showed him some pictures, Free food coupons at a real on site restaurant, and a rental car. They said that it will take a week to complete repairs. I stressed the importance of replacing the contaminated exhaust pipe, and he indicated that they will need approval to either "CLEAN" it, or what I indicated is my only acceptable option "REPLACE" that section. I am happy that they found the problem and are confident that the repairs will completely solve it.

I got a call from the Service manager yesterday with an update. The breather tube that was supposed to be connected to the PTU that was mysteriously missing was backordered and finally came in yesterday afternoon. Ford also approved a replacement of all affected exhaust components! He told me that once the repairs are completed, he was going to have the entire undercarriage steam cleaned to remove anything that shouln't be there, then have the tech test drive it, then inspect again to ensure no leaks. Finally, because I am out of town today (with my rental car), he is going to have the car detailed and waiting for me in the new car delivery area of the dealership tomorrow. How many people get to take delivery of their new car twice???!! Anyway, after I get my SilverSport back I'll give you an update with updated pictures.

Todd

Resolved!

My SilverSport is safely back home! Parts replaced, steam cleaned, detailed, and NO SMELLINESS!! Thanks Crystal for the help along the way.:chug:

Atta Boy Todd !!!

and only one down payment to have it delivered twice :)

So this was the vent for the front differential ?
Congratulation.

So I test drove an Ex - Limited today and the smell was definitely there. Mentioned it and the sales guy said its a new car so the exhaust will smell because I had the roof open. I actually wanted to kick him out of the car. lol. Anyway I am glad there is a fix and will continue with my purchase.

Qualify the following with the fact that I'm not a mechanic. From what I've researched though (according to my wife dozens of hours!), and what I learned from the techs at South Bay Ford, this was OFFICIALLY caused by a "missing" breather tube from the Power Transfer Unit (aka PTU, aka Tansfer Case). A differential and transfer case are related, as they work together, but are far from the same thing. The front and rear differentials are each sealed units that apply appropriate power to each wheel, while the PTU adjusts the amount of torque in a part time, or traction control system ( Ford Ex) from the front axle to the rear. The fluid in the PTU is significantly more viscous (thick) than the thinner, redder ATF in the differentials. I'm trying to help here, but if there is a mechanic in the house, please correct me. And check out this link that is older, but explains transfer case theory pretty well: http://www.fordification.com/tech/transfercase.htm

I had no "TSB's" done related to my problem, and for the record I drove 60 miles in mixed driving today (no punching it) after my repairs and have ZERO smell in the cabin, or outside of the cabin with my head near the pipes, under the chassis, or under the hood. FWIW.

Signed,

Happy SilverSport Owner

well actually that's different from needing a repair - ANY new car with zero miles WILL have smells at first,
(especially if my wife is test driving it !!! as soon as she drove the sport I knew we were getting it even though the limited had more features :)
when the test drive was over the sport was popping, creaking, actually WHEEZING I think !!!)

but within short order once the exhaust headers, etc... burn in that will go away... iirc on mine it was like 100 miles...

Mine had 15 km (9 mi) on it when I picked it up and never noticed any smells at all. I park in the garage when at home and that should make any odours more noticeable.

You stated; "ANY new car with zero miles WILL have smells at first,

". Are you still happily married?? :D

The regional service manager in my area just called me to check on the status of my vehicle and to find out if everything has been handled. I told him that it had, that the service team was excellent and that I'm happy. He was glad to hear that, but apologetic for me having to deal with the situation at all, and told me he is attaching a 3 year comprehensive service plan to my vehicle's VIN for my trouble . THANK YOU FORD!!

You're welcome, Toddgfd! I'm thrilled to see that everything worked out. If you need me to step in for any reason in the future, you know how to reach me. :)

My issue turned out to be a problem with the oil filter from the factory. So we are once again happy with the new Explorer. I was glad to know that it wasn't anything major. And coming home from the dealership last night my wife averaged a little over 25mpg! This was about 50miles ranging from 60-70 mph.

Glad to hear that jmc! Do you have the 2.0 EcoBoost? That mileage is awesome!
