After a few blocks of driving I get a banging sound from under the truck. Here's the weird part it doesn't do it when it in 4 wheel drive. I thought it might be the transfer case not disingaging completly? Slightly grabbing the chain? I took the motor off and it seems to be alright. Could it be this plastic part (stopper) in the motor I've been reading about? I have lot's of spare parts including a transfer case so it would be an easy fix I hope.
I need help because I love my truck! I have newer vehicles but I love these trucks.

If you have a spare transfer case, swap that in!

A banging like that which goes away in 4H sounds more like the hubs aren't disengaging consistently. Do you still have the stock auto hubs?

I just had the same sound. Starts when the wheel is turned all the way left or right. When I engaged the 4x4 (Auto hubs) the sounds go away. I changed a hub and all better. If you have auto hubs, go for the manual. Much cheaper and more reliable.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Thanks members,
Thanks for helping me out. Yes I do have auto hubs. I have four sets of used auto hubs, maybe I'll try those first. I've been reading about too much grease in hub. I'm sure they have alot of grease in them. Can the tranfer case some how be causing this? What exactly does the stopper do on the motor for the transfer case? The one that likes to fall apart. Does it just tell the 4x4 module it's not in the right position? Or will it effect the disengaging of the 4x4?
