the lights dim on my explorer when i turn it off - kinda a significant dim - i cleaned the battery post connections but that did not change anything - i don't have a voltmeter or battery tester

i read an article at edmunds.com that said the altenator does not recharge the battery, just maintains it (?)

is this true? i am debating buying a trickle charger and placing it on the battery overnight - if i do, should the battery be disconnected from the car while charging?

If you don't have anyway to test it, most auto stores will test the battery and alternator for free. I wouldn't necessarily buy anything based on what they tell you, but it may help you narrow down the problem. Also, you don't need to disconnect the battery to put a charger on it. Just make sure you don't overcharge it. A trickle charger should be fine.

Well how does it start, simple as that

A starter is going to take alot more amps then lights, if it starts fine then leave the lights alone
