I just bought a used bed extender for my 2004 Sport Trac and it does not have the tie down straps that hook into the locking mechanism for the tail gate. Does anyone have a source where I can get them.
Are you talking about the metal tang things that lock over the hinge pin, or the lock pin.
The lock pin - dealer
The hinge pins that the cage locks into (look like the door striker pin??)- dealer/wrecker
Oh I don't know the real name for the hinge pin.
- never knew that straps were needed, unless the design changed on '04

It is called a quick latch system and goes into the slot on the sides of the tailgate and the strap portion secures the extender. It helps secure the extender from theft if you leave the gate open.
I understand that if somebody wants it bad enough that nothing is going to stop them. What I meant is the straps will make it a little harder for somebody to just grab it when its open. I have a cover on the bed so when its retracted its not a problem. What I really need it for is to keep the extender secured to the gate when I'm driving.
I don't know what you meant with your quote but I did use google and found out the exact name of them, just not who had them for sale for my model truck.
Also if you look closer the latch kit is listed for a Ford 1993 - 2007 Ranger (excludes Flareside) only. The lower listing is for the Sport Trac and does not list a latch kit......
Strange, I have the factory bed extender in mine, and short of removing the bed sides there would be no way of stealing it with the tailgate closed and the extender folded in. When the extender is folded in, the slots allowing it to come off face up, so it would have to go down through the bed floor to be removed. Only with the tailgate down and the extender folded out can it be removed from the truck. I just assumed all the years were like this, but I guess I was wrong.
Yes Tom it is the straps that hold the extender to the tailgate. I cannot find who has just them and not part of a package. I don't want to pay for stuff I do not need. I hesitate to call the dealer because I do not want to be ripped off but it looks like I might have to.

Call AMP Research. They hold the patent on bed extenders. Every one you see (including OEM Ford) is either made by them or licensed by them. When I needed pivots brackets for mine, they sold them to me.

I take it the used extender you bought was not designed for a Sport Trac, or at least it's not a design similar to the OEM ones. On my extender, I have lock pins just above the hinge that click into the holes just above and below the hinge pins on the bed, locking it either open or closed. This keeps the extender pressed against the tailgate, preventing it from rotating and allowing cargo out. It also negates the need for the straps you are describing, which is why I couldn't quite figure out what you were talking about. As far as I know, all of the years of Sport Tracs had a design similar to mine, and the newer Rangers do as well. You will probably have to find some for an older Ranger that doesn't have the lock pins. I would contact AMP like rwenzing said and see what they say. Best of luck .

10-9906 Bed Extender Strap Latch Kit $34.95 3 years
When it's not available - make it.
Everyone (maybe myself too) is thinking this is to keep the cage from bouncing.
Arichio only wants this for added theft prevention, if someone know how to take it off, and went to his truck.
- They would need to make a second trip with scissors or a knife to cut the strap.
This is exactly what I want them for. The extender is made for my model truck and it does have the locking pins on the sides of the bed. The straps are for extra stability. Sorry for all the confusion guys.
Can someone post a pic of how the bed extender mounts to the ST box. I just got one without hardware and want to see what I am missing. Any help would be great. Thanks.
They must have changed it. On my old '05 the extender had to be, uh, extended, to remove it. Only came out one way. With the tailgate closed and/or locked the extender wasn't coming out unless you broke it. My '08 is the same.
