One of the few options my Sport Trac is missing is the bed extender. Having transported some larger items a few times already in the month or two that I've owned it, I'd definitely like to have the option of folding down the tail gate and swinging this thing out.

I see a few on Craigslist from F-150s, Rangers, or other trucks. Are these universal or do I need to find one specifically made for Sport Tracs?

Thanks. :)

They're specific to the Sport Trac.

Although, IIRC, I think one from an F150 stepside will work. I'd check into that, though.

Yep, the mid 2000's stepside/ flareside with fit, I have one on mine but I chopped the 2.5"s off the ends to make it the same length as the ST extender.

I'm from CT - thanks for the suggestions though. :)

I actually met up with someone tonight that was selling the tonneau cover and bed extender from their Sport Trac. They said that they had a 2001, but after buying the bed extender (unfortunately), I can't seem to get it to fit.

Any time I push the pins into what I presume are the mounting holes, it doesn't seem to quite be wide enough. I can push a pin into one side, but when I push the pin into the other side, the first one pops back out. Secondly, it seems to extend past the two square indentations on the tail gate when down.

Perhaps this is actually an F150 bed extender (I'll take pictures tomorrow), but they were absolutely insistent that it came off of their 2001 Sport Trac and it fit perfectly. The width really concerns me, though. Here's to hoping that I'm just an idiot and wasn't mounting it properly or something.

Yeah the tabs are tight in the holes to secure them in. Follow my mod project, it sounds like it maybe a F1-50 flareside extender and they didn't know it because it fit on their ST.

Now I'm really confused. The Part Number on the bed extender that I bought is 1U5A-19G299-AA, which SEEMS to be a Gen 1 Sport Trac bed extender, I just don't know why I can't get it to fit. Maybe I'm just an idiot today...

Here are some pictures to help illustrate my issues:

Left side locked in to the bottom hole (is that correct?)

With the left side locked in, here's the gap on the right side. Note that if I push the ride side pin in, the left side pops out. It seems to be about half an inch (or more) too narrow:

Here's how far it extends out with the pins lined up for the top or bottom holes. I was under the impression that part of the bed extender should fit into those two square indentations in the tailgate:

Here's an overall view of the bed extender:

And finally, here's a picture of the sticker on it:

Ok, now I'm confused, the third picture showed the extender past the square inserts but then the next picture shows it lined up.

the lock pins on mine are a pain to push in too, I sprayed them with PB Blaster and it seemed to help some. I have to push down on the extender to force the lock pins into position but they lock into palce and work fine.

In the fourth picture, I had pushed the entire thing in so that it no longer lines up with the pin holes.

Could you do me a huge favor and check the part number on yours to see if it matches mine?

Also, I only have two push pins on mine, but the manual talks about some kind of lock in the middle of each side. Am I missing other hardware here? Essentially, what holds it in place and allows it to pivot? If it's just those two push pins (with green / red coloring for locked / unlocked), I don't see how that will keep it in place. With both pins fully extended, I can still pick the bed extender up by hand and wiggle it out of the slot.

Edit: I read this from another thread:

the pivot points are 2 bolts that are/will be located right inside the bed of your truck, right behind the tailgate when closed. If you look you should see 3 holes on each side, the holes in the center on each side are where the pivot points will go. They thread into your bed and stay there when you remove your extender. On the extender will be a locking mechanism on each side, so you can lock it in place so it doesn't bounce up and down in the bed or tailgate

So, from the sound of things, it looks like I'm missing the pivot points. Now things are making more sense. It looks like I'll be taking a trip to a dealership soon.

Yep, the center of the extender has a clip on each side that lock onto the pivot pins. They look just like door strikers.

Yep, just checked the part number on mine and it's the same. gte some pivot pins and follow my mod thread that I linked to if you wanna make it fit right and be a Trac extender.

Sorry guys, new to the forum - hijacking this old thread. This is the exact same problem I am having; there are a couple other posts with exploded diagrams of parts, but this is the closest to my issue - does that mean it's an F-150 extender not a ST extender?

PN 1U5A-19G299-AA is what my '01 ST came with.

Yes, but that's the same # on the decal on the F-150 extender I recently purchased. It's totally different from the genuine Sport Trac bed extender I have, but it fits my '01 Sport Trac just fine except the rear uprights need to be moved in. I didn't ask which year/model F-150 it came from.

Thanks - I think it is the F-150 extender - does anyone have a good source for the pivot pins (or part number)? Tried a couple from other threads and links were no longer good.

They're just door striker bolts, about $8 ea at the parts stores. The non-threaded part should be just about 1". The center is about 1/2" dia, and the head on the end is roughly 3/4". I bought some for my '02 that didn't come equipped for a bed extender 3 1/2 yrs ago, and just now compared them to my '01 which did come from the factory with a bed extender, and they're identical. I think I went to the salvage yard and got a variety of striker bolts, and used the ones that worked. I think they were striker bolts for the tailgate on an F series pickup. If your truck wasn't originally equipped with a bed extender, the holes are there for the pivot pins, but you'll need to tap them. I got one to screw in without tapping the hole, but bought a tap for the other side. You can buy individual taps and use vise grips or something for a handle. The threads are metric.
