Before I pull the head - Need Advice!

Does anybody do a crate motor for a good price?

What are crate motors? Re-manufactured? Did a quick search and seems the results assume I know what it means.

Any ways, everything is done except separating motor from tranny. I might do that in my neighbors shop, but it IS definitely time to get that new/used or even crate motor delivered!, oh and I still cannot get that fan clutch off. I'm hoping to break it off when I pull the motor :D -DW

Son of a....

Pull the bracket with A/C compressor forward until it clears the water pump pulley.Slide the bracket away from the A/C compressor and set aside

It was caught on something, and realized I never located a 10MM bolt to remove in streetrod's guide, so I loosened the only 10 MM bolt I could see. Sorry EPA. It wasn't on purpose! Well, A/C is uncharged now - may as well take off the compressor - can always use more room. -DW

You need a special wrench to get the fan clutch off. You guys would get them from harbor freight, they are at princess auto up here. If you don't use the proper wrench you have about a 95% Chance of buggering it up. The engine wont clear the rad without it off, but from the sounds of it you need a new rad too.

If you want to look at the for shop manual you can find it here. http://search.ebscohost.com/

I rented the wrench and pully holder from Autozone, but the wrench started to strip, so I just stopped. I know the size of the wrench is 1 7/16 or 36 MM?, but I ain't got one that big! Got a freaking 36MM socket, but that won't help.

The radiator is out....not sure why you think I need a new one? Because it's the old inefficient factory 1 inch size? Thanks - DW

Lol, nope, i thought you busted the drain off the bottom.
You don't actually have to pull the rad. With the fan and the clutch off you have about 6 inches of room to lift the engine out. With the rad out you should be okay anyway.

Oh yeah, that's just a plastic little bolt. I was working at night and didn't expect to find even more plastic on this truck! Easily replaceable. The bolt that is.

Upper Oil Pan?

As I wait for my new/used motor to arrive, I am curious to see if I can find any possible foreign matter that may have put the hole in the piston. What are the chances it would have made it down to the bottom oil pan? I understand if anything is in the upper pan, I'd have to pull the motor (which I'm doing any ways), but curiosity has got the best of me while I wait. Should I even bother? I don't want to drain the oil out of the crap motor, as I would have to dispose the oil, and don't want to deal with all that mess...

Update on the Swap: My OTHER neighbor, the one without the cool shop, said he will help me pull the motor, separate the tranny, all that's needed in exchange for a 12 pack. He knows what he doing. I don't. That helps! He even mentioned my motor is not ready for a swap because he saw that the left exhaust manifold was still connected. YUP! I missed that.

Thanks! DW
