First off my haynes and my Chiltons do not explain how to change the belt tensioner on my 94 ex. So my questions are how many bolts hod it on? Do I have to worry about reverse threads?
I guess I am ultimately looking for some to explain the replacement procedure to me.

These are relatively simple to replace, but can be tricky to do for the first time.

Tight quarters getting to the bolt with the fan & shroud there, so removing them makes this job easy. Getting the clutch fan off is the hardest part in this procedure. A tool made for removing the fan is a good investment and most auto stores sell them for around $20. The bolts are standard RH threads. If you look on your shroud, it will say which way the threading is in molded print.

I do suggest you get a good quality replacement part, such as the Motorcraft or Dayco.

A 14mm wrench placed on one of the water pump bolts, then the fan tool placed on the large nut. Turn fan nut (RH threads) counterclockwise to loosen. Two 10mm bolts holding the shroud on at the top. Remove both the fan & shroud at the same time, place aside.

Remove the serpentine belt. Place a 3/8" extension inside the square hole on the tensioner, push to loosen the belt, remove belt.

Remove the tensioner. The center bolt on the round bell looking part simply removes the part. (RH threads as well)

Reverse the order to install. The clutch fan install will be the absolute hardest part of any of this. Just be patient, and expect it to be a bit of a fight. The threads are fine, so it is hard to get it started while man handling the shroud and fan at the same time.

Congrats! You just saved big $$ doing this yourself!

There's only one bolt that holds it on and it's your standard "righty tighty, lefty loosey" bolt. I replaced the one on our 94 2 months ago and all I did was remove the serpentine belt, remove the tensioner assembly, and then reinstall the two. I didn't need nor want to remove the fan and fan clutch assembly.

I guess I should have added that if you have large hands and arms, (like myself) it is just plain easier to work on with the fan off. If you have smaller arms and nimble hands, by all means, leave the fan on.

Great video Tony. 1st gen is just about the same as the 2nd gen to work on, but the battery is on the pass side and you don't have as much room to work.

X2 on the big hands, You can also crawl under the truck and change it from the bottom.

I got it fixed. but all this stuff ended up being bad.
