I'd recommend a good HD AM/FM/CD or DVD with an iPod interface, have you seen the double din stereos that most people are putting in now? You have to search pretty damn hard to find a car stereo that ISN'T a flush mounted in-dash with removeable faceplate. Alpine, Kenwood, JVC and Pioneer all make good quality, excellent sounding systems for a late-model car without breaking the bank. Start by looking at some online sites like Crutchfield and you will get some good ideas where YOU want to start while keeping within your budget.

Metra makes a pretty good install kit for your Explorer

i vote metra as well. here is a picture of my metra kit. it sits back like the factory radio does.
