The Ranger is a very light-duty pickup. The Explorer can carry/tow just as much weight. The only advantage the Ranger has is it's not already carrying around the weight of an enclosed rear cargo area.

This is also why the Ranger and pickups have lower spring rate leaf springs - otherwise it'd ride like a dump truck when unloaded.
