First off let me say, Dave, that i couldn't be paid to heed a word written in consumer reports. They have been proven to be biased and fraudulent in their studies, specifically on the Suzuki Samurai and the Isuzu Trooper. This kind of unfair advertising/rhetoric is harmful to the sport utility market and offroading in general deeming big boxy suv's as unsafe. If they were obviously biased on these two there is nothing to say they don't fudge or report whatever they want on other items.

that said there have been countless members of this site . people that care about suv's and explorers on and offroad . that have said the Firestone atx's are trash. My father in law has a set and can't wait till they are worn enough to warrant buying new skins. He is looking at the Michelins, i need Mud Terrains so i don't know about the BFG lt or the Michelin ltx.

hope this 1) helped a little and

2) gave you some insight into consumer reports and swayed your opinion

I just read an article in Consumer Reports. It rated the BF Goodrich Longtrail T/A very well. Previously I have been looking at the Michelin LTX, but the $15.00 per tire savings and CR report

I need a tire that is good on the highway, rain, snow, and ok for occasionally trail use when we go to the cabin.

Last question. I'm currently running stock Firestone ATX's. Will these new tires really be that much better for the price?

Thanks for any help. All the feedback about my transmission oil was well received.

Dave - I have a new Explorer and because the Firestones make a LOT of noise, I too am looking at the Michelins (will sell the OEM tires). I've read the Consumer Reports article you referenced, their comments are pretty much in line with the customer feed back reports at Tire Rack's web site. You might check there for validation of the Consumer Report's article.

Also check out the Pirelli Scorpion ATs and the Yokohama Geolandar ATs. Both of these are excellent in the rain, extremely quiet, good in snow, and very trail worthy, best of all they are much cheaper than the Michelins.

Dave-I have the BFG Longtrails on my '91XLT. I like them very much. They are the quietest, smoothest riding tires I ever had on my Explorer. I got 31x10.5-15s from Sam's for $90 each along with free rotation and balance for the life of the tire. I also got a 40,000 mile warranty. I'll say that if you do more highway and light offroading this is a good tire for you. I had Firestones(OEM), Yokohamas and Bridgestones prior to the BFGs. I think you can't go wrong with BFGs.

I am plenty pleased with my Michelin LTX M/S for on-road use. They are quiet and handle the rain/snow/slush very well. They do all right on light trail rides, but with my increased interest in four wheeling I kind of wish I got something with a little more aggressive tread. Maybe the AT's would have been a better choice.

just a note, since i work for Michelin which owns BFGoodrich i recently acquired a set of Longtrails(31x10.5x15) for my Explorer, which i don't have now, but i need to get rid of. if there are any takers cheap at $300.00 never mounted---- e-mail me
