blinky blinky lights on my dash

My 4x4 High and Low Lights on my 1999 Ford Explorer XLT blink 5 times about every 2 minutes. I just crossed 40,000 miles.. Does anyone know what the truck is trying to tell me?

That your 4 wheel drive system will not work until you get it fixed. When the GEM computer detects a problem in the 4 wheel drive system, it puts the system in 2 wheel drive and flashes the lights to warn the driver. It could be anything from a bad speed sensor, bad shift solenoid, bad GEM or an internal problem in the transfer case. Regardless, until you have the codes read by an OBD-II scanner you won't know for sure until your replace the faulty part or the faulty part starts working again.

Mine did that to me exactly once... 5600 miles on it, decelerating on a freeway off-ramp. It flashed until I got to my girlfriend's place, and when I started the car back up everything was back to normal. Never did it again, and no codes stored in the PCM. It was a mystery....

He's right, though. There's something wrong. Let the dealer connect it and tell you exactly what the problem is. (I HATE saying that!!)
