blower scoop on 98

ok to start off id like to say that if you check out this thread and think it is a stupid idea please DONT tell me. im just trying to make a great looking X to my taste. im not trying to be a ##### but i got ragged on by my girlfriend about how bad it look and i hadnt even installed it yet. so if you think it wont work out just read along until it is finished at a later date.with that said here are some pics to get started.

ok here is the scoop where i want it. i dont know where to go from here but in two ways. i could mount it on the hood and cut a circle whole below in and let i connect from there when i shut the hood. or mount in on the engine in some fasion and just cut a hole in the hood around the scoop itself. and maybe find a way to fabracate a decent looking way to cover up the rigid hole around it. the second one is the way i want to go but the first one there would be no hole to look at if its under the scoop

ok heres my dirty ass engine. now could i take off that intake tube and put a more flexable one to run up to the scoop. how would this be done.

i greatly appriciate any help from here on out

No i wont.i will stand behind it even if it dont work. and in the event i dont work out i will rig it back to the way it was and keep the scoop on for the show. mayeb just get a bigger intake to replace the one i messed up. all in all its going to be major deal to me that i have accomplished somthing and put my all into it. i Will make this work even if it is crap. and i really wont be the one cutting the hole my hood. that is done by a pro.

Sorry, it's late.

You know the shaker hood scoop on the Mach 1s? Everybody thinks it's so badass, but Car and Driver concluded that it really doesn't help the engine significantly at all, it's mostly for show. And that was something designed by Ford engineers. You might as well put that blower scoop on with 3M tape because you're not gonna gain anything from a maze of tubes and a big hole under the hood.

Haven't people known for years that Shakers are too low to have the ram air effect work? I always thought that they were. But seeing the scoop shake with the engine outside the hood is what made them awesome.

EDIT: Just another option, I have a beat up old fibreglass scoop like used on the Hemi Dart, just not as big.

well here is a rought sketch of what i might need to hold the scoop in place. is this what yall were talking about with brakets from the engine wall?

Heres an idea of how much room you have under the hood to work with (and an idea for mounting to the frame):

Thats 1.5" tubing, and its touching the plastic cover over the TB and the insulation under the hood.

that is serously going to help. i was wondering how much room i had.

Well let me throw in my $.02. Your little ram air idea is not going to work, there is not enough clearence. Your best bet would be to cut the hole in your hood for the scoop thinger you want, leave your intake tube where it is and get a kkm. You will still get colder air into your intake.

i think this is more for astetic purposes isnt it?..either way good luck to u..ull figure it out it will just take some time =-)

Jefe, as if it wasnt hard enough to change the plugs!! hahaha looks great..........

plugs shouldn't be too bad (gots lots of room coming in from the fender well. Thats how I've always done them). . .but I am fearing the day I need to do something in the engine bay and the coil-over hoops are in the way.

need more clearence

i think you should seriously consider adding a body lift to gain some clearence under the hood.

maybe buy some 1" blocks cheap to get that extra inch under there. supposedly you can reuse the same stock hardware with the 1" lift instead of buying a complete 2" or 3" kit.

i have heard you can do it on first gens anyway, but don't know about others

Hmm, a body lift to do a questionable induction mod. Sounds reasonable to me!

It is a solution, but not a great one unless you were planning on a bl in the future.

:-)

questionable mod or not, it sounds like he is pretty dead set on doing it, for better or for worse.

i was just suggesting a way to gain some clearence under the hood.

he could also put a monster cowl in the hood. just hack out a good section. add some vertical peices where the cuts are and then weld the cut section back on top. basically just displace however much of the hood up as high as he wants.

add clearence....yes

look like crap...... good chance of that

:-)

I would get a hood and intake from a junk yard and use them to figure it out. That way if you can't make it work, you truck is still intack.....

body lift was already in consideration. i was told that a few times already.

u could get like a 3" cowel hood or whatever comes just upto the top of the scoop...then u could cut a hole in that mount the scoop so just the impeler?( is that what they are called) fins stick out then smothe it all out..would be prety cool i think

Butterflies...not impeller.Impeller is the blades on a turbocharger or marine jet drive.
