I have used (for my water pump and thermostat) gasket with two thin layers of blue RTV. IMO, the combo provides the best mating and mechanical resistance.

Right on. For transmission pan & valve covers, gasket only. Transfer case & rear diff cover, RTV only. Both have their place, and work well together also.
