ok guys here goes .i been thru the wringer with this truck lately and have replaced alot of parts .

new head gaskets
new upper plenum gaskets
new intake gaskets
new water pump and gaskets
new timing chain,new guide,new gears,new tensioner
new timing cover gaskets
new radiator
new hoses
new plugs
new belt tensioner
flush and fill trans and new trans pan gasket
all new fuilds

now it starts bogging down on me .doesnt wanna hold idle under load .idle will surge up n down ,truck stalls sometimes .
wont pull out sometimes .
once you get it rolling and the rpm`s are up it runs good .come to a stop and off the line it wants to stall, bog down ,idle bad .

but once it kicks in ,runs good for a bit .

i just pumped about 1200.00 dollars in repairs into this 2000 4.0 ohv engine in the past 2 months .135,000 miles on it

its killing me .needs something new every week lately .and it costs me hundreds every time.

today i cleaned the aic valve
cleaned the air sampling sensor in the airtube

still acting up .

any ideas run them by me .gonna go look at the egr valve right now .then might pick up some ignition wires next .

this thing is killing me ...help!!!

ps-wheres the fuel pump?in the tank?

ok ,i think i got it .when i went back out i heard the telltale howl in the airbox .so i went messing with the aic again .eventually taking the black plastic cap off it .
that seemed to help .i now have full power again .so i guess a aic valve is in the near future .

on another note i put my drivers window down and couldnt get it back up ....dam truck ....i need some window viagra.

one thing after another lately.everythings breaking at once .hard keeping up with all the repairs lately.

i will update as i go .hopefully it runs good tomorrow.

replaced the aic valve with a new one today and so far no issues.

just an update for those having the same issues.

update ......aic was not the problem.

i am still having this problem .i have now traced it to the fuel pump. today the truck ran normal all morning until the gas gauge reached less than a quarter tank ,then the bucking/stalling and loss of power started again .
i put my thinking cap on and said to the wife lets go put more gas in .

put 20 bucks in gas in ,bringing the level of gas up over a half tank .truck ran fine again after that .when i told my mechanic this he said fuel pump or fuel pump pickup has a hole in it .

sounds right to me .this is my next course of action .i do think this will be the fix .with 138,000 on the clock this truck is killing us in repairs this year ,and last year too.its all catching up to us now .

i will update again next week after the pump goes in .

never did replace the pump .after the heat wave passed (it was 101 that day)the pump has been running fine .could it be that the extreme heat was causing me to have vaporlock?and when i added fresh gas to the tank(cooling the gas in there)it went away??

also when was the last time you replaced the fuel filter?

One possibility is that your fuel pump is weak and overheating. Does the poor performance happen on a cold start or only after driving for a while? Have you measured the fuel pressure?

had the problem during the tripple digit heat days after a long ride .on the worst day in question i added fresh gas and the problem went away .havent had the issue in about a week now since the temps went down some .

never changed the gas filter .truck has 138,000 and counting .i,m getting around to it .i have replaced alot of things this past year .trucks breaking down faster than i can keep up lately .

but shes up and running good again (knock on wood!)

I am new here guys. Gonna give you a bit about my Explorer. I bought if for $500 and it had a blown motor. Body, interior, everything was perfect (Leather, sunroof, 6-disc.....) Put the 2000 SOHC motor in her for $1200 and now have a perfect hunting wagon.

I experienced this same exact issue yesterday. It was the first longer trip I had taken in it and the first triple digit day of the year. Experienced the exact same problems. Limped it to the parts store and replaced the ICM. Runs great, but haven't driven it since it has been hot today. I will update on the ride home. I too, thought it was the pump because this happened after being below 1/4 tank. Will keep you posted......

you guys need to run a fuel pressure test to see what pressure your running. If you have a returnless system (fpr in the tank with only one line coming front from the tank) it should be about 62psi. If you have a return style system (two lines from the tank FPR on the fuel rail) it should be about 35psi.

Keep in mind that electrical problems can also seem like fuel delivery issues, and electrical items are more likely to fail in the heat (especially coils).

I had to get towed yesterday to the nearest shop...just to see if they could figure it out ($90.00 for a air conditioned shop for 2 hours), they ran codes and did a fuel pressure test. No codes and 70psi at idle.

70psi is way too much

At the rail?

yes, first you need to figure out which system you have. I am aware of only two types of systems on explorers there is the 62psi returnless system, and the 35psi system with a return line. if you have the 35psi system you are way too high. If you have the 62 then you are still running on the high side and probably will see a mileage reduction.

i thought i read that the second generation had the returnless system?aka...my 2000 should have a returnless system??
i havent had the stalling or bucking since the tripple digit days have been gone .
although i did get a cyl 4 misfire and i had to replace that plug.
shes running good again now .knock on wood....lol

does autozone read your fuel pressure for free??just wondering.

since the heat wave has passed i have ran my fuel right down to empty without an issue.
it doesnt take long to reach empty, believe me..lol

autozone may have a gauge that you can rent/borrow but to my knowledge they will not perform the work. However sometimes if you offer the guys at the store a few bucks they will help you out. It is a simple process and the gauge only costs about 40 bucks and is a useful diagnostic tool for future repairs/problems

I've got a similar problem. changed the fule pump filter and regultor and I still only have 30 psi at the rail and 35 with the regulator unhooked. Also I think my evap system is leaking because if i get low on gas and take the fuel cap off you can't hear pressure relasing so I'm thinking it may be the canister, pressure sensor on the fuel tank, or the canister solenoid.... May check those out..

in the 5 years I've had my truck I have never heard the fuel cap pressure release so I wouldn't be too concerned with that.

Your 97 could have either a 35psi or 62psi system I believe they started mixing and matching systems in those years. But I could be wrong. You will need to verify which one you have if it is a 35psi system then your 30psi is not out of the ballpark just a little low.

So with my motor showing 70psi, is this a problem? I need to check the service ticket to see if that is what I was actually told.

If you were referring to me.... I think there has to be something wrong with the 30 psi if i have a new pump filter and regulator.. Especially something wrong with the fact that with the vacuum line unhooked it only rises to 35 and should be between 50 and 55....
