I have a '97 Explorer XLT 6-cyl SOHC with 90,000 miles on it. Been driving on the beach for 1 year and a half since I bought it used. I have an extended warranty on but only 10K left. Problem: I can no longer drive on the sand (sand has tracks in it from other vehicles) because the vehicle acts like it's bogging down as the RPMs climb to 1800 to 2000. The engine sounds like it's overworking and it gets extremely hot underneath. Here's the key! The wheels are not spinning! It's like the brakes are on. Another key: When I shift to reverse, there's the loud clunk and then I drive out with no problem. In fact, I pick up speed. The dealer can't duplicate the fault at his shop and says there is no fault. Of course, since I've been driving the same beach for some time with no problem, I know there is one. I've been driving 4-wheels since 1977 and I just can't convince these guys to take it for a run on the beach. Ford Customer service is a joke! They just send you back to the dealer.
P.S.: I've never had to let the air out of my tires on any vehicle and I've always been able to drive this area.
Hope someone has an idea that I can relay to the dealer. Or how I can contact someone higher than the dealer to help. I even have a video showing the problem'
