Box air space question

heres one for yall

say I need to build a box that for a sub that needs 1.20 cubic feet of air space, and that particular sub displaces ( i dunno what a normal sub might displace) say .5 cubic feet.
so do you build the box so it has 1.20 cubic feet, or 1.20 plus what the speaker displacement in the box is??

i dunno if anyone understands what the hell i'm trying to say....i hope someone does.

basically if the recommended air space says 1.20 will it be safe to build a box with 1.20 cubic feet air space and have the sub sound great??
or do i need to add in the sub displacement to the recommended air space?

add the displacement of the subwoofer.

you can also build the box bigger than the recommended enclosure size. if you want it to really hit hard, go a little bigger.
