Apparently I have an intermittent brake light issue. Sometimes all three lights will work and sometime only the third light will work. At first i thought it was a short but after doing a search I think it might be the multi function switch. I know i should test the switch before I go out and buy a new one but I'm not sure how to test it or what type of tester I would need. Could someone shed some light on this situation? Thanks in advance.

as dum as this might sound, check your bulbs, and the sockets. this happened to me today. one brake light would work when it felt like it. i noticed that the socket almost looked burnt.

I've already checked the bulbs and the sockets look fine as well, if it makes any difference my ex has the factory trailer wiring currently installed. Could that be the culprit? If it is that would be the perfect reason to remove it. Any other suggestions that may result in a cheap repair?

I would step on the brake and have a helper watch the brake lights. Then jiggle the MFS and use the various functions (turn sig, wiper, high/low beam) and have your helper see if the brake lights stay on (or off).

search on the third brake light or high brake light not working.... people find a problem with the wiring related to the trailer package somewhere near / under bumper.
