Brake lights only come on when pedal pressed hard

My girls 03 sport tracs brake lights only come on when pushing hard on the brake pedal. They wont come on when just tapping the brakes and im worried she might get hit if she dont press hard enough before I can get the problem sorted out. Pads need to be replaced just haven't had the money to do it yet so atm I dont know what could be causing it.

Check your brake light switch...its mounted on the brake pedal under the dash, u should be able to see it if you look up the brake pedal. it closes the brake light circuit when the pedal is moved. check for operation, it should click when you move the pedal more than an inch or so. it my be adjustible, it may be sticking.
