Mr. All-American mechanic at the brake shop slathered tons o' grease in my auto-locking hubs. When driving I kept hearing and feeling "clunk-clunk-clunk". Took the hubs off, found the problem, got as much grease out as I could without disassembling the hubs... now I hear "click-click-click" instead but I can't feel anything.

I'm wondering what I should do from here (besides switch to manual hubs), my '94 XLT 4X4 rarely gets offroad. Would soaking with ATF help get the grease out of the hub? Brake cleaner? Blow-torch or dynamite? :)

The hubs were fine and functioned great (recent drive through Titus Canyon) until the ill-fated trip to the brake shop.

turn them upside down and fill them with ATF
let them soak...........................then drip dry and re-install.

not a bad idea to wipe allthe grease you can out of there first.

You can also go all out and take them apart, cleaning them.

I would inform that mechanic not to do that in the future

Had it been me in this same situation I woulda DEMANDED a full refund on my brake job and demand that they reimburse me to have a mechanic get all the grease out of the auto hubs. Good thing I do my own brake work then eh. Disk brakes aren't hard it's the drums that can be a royal PITA to do if you've never done them. I let my dad do the rear brakes on my X since he's real good at it.

The mechanic should have known better :nono:

Unless you really like him and want to stay on good terms you should atleast inform him that what he did could have potentially damaged your (expensive) auto hubs.
