I have a broken abs sensor/speed sensor on my right front hub and I was wonderinn would this cause my car to stick in 4wd? Because it would sense the wheels slipping and keep it in 4wd?

Thanks!

hmmmm... it probably would because the computer would think the rear is spinning faster then the front and try to engage 4wd. You may want to pull the fuse just for safety until you get a new sensor. BTW you will need to buy the entire hub assembly ford does not sell just the sensor AFAIK. You may get lucky at a local salvage yard as well...

I don't think that the ABS sensor would cause the AWD to "kick in". From my understanding the transfer case and differentials are a mechanical limited slip design, not an electronic type.

My experience with having a ABS sensor gone bad was that the ABS system would kick on whenever you slowed to a stop. Somewhere around 5mph you would feel the feedback of the ABS kicking in through the brake pedal (and hear it too).

he has a 97 sport which has automatic 4wd not AWD. AWD was only available on later models (gen3) and 5.0 Gen2 models.

and yes the automatic 4wd is controlled by the abs sensors. If the computer notices that the rear sensor is spinning faster then the front it automatically engages the transfer case.

he is not diagnosing an abs problem, he apparently knows it is broken. my guess is that he not only has the abs light on, but also has the abs kicking in all the time which lead him to the problem in the first place....

Would this apply on a 96 Explorer Control Trac when it is in 2WD?

I have an ABS Sensor that is not working and the front driveshaft (from T-Case to the Diff.) grabs and tries to engage with the vehicle in the air, all tires spinning in 2WD.

In 4X4 Auto all is fine, but in 2WD it is giving me a thumping noise with the front shaft trying to engage.

I have been chasing this for a month or so, even posted a thread on it with no concrete answers.

If anyone knows if they think this is my problem, please let me know as I am ready to condemn my T-Case and replace it which I do not want to do if it's not my problem.

Thanks In Advance,

Dave
