I was helping my buddy with some work on his 1996 4.0 Explorer Limited. Among the problems was an automatic transmission issue with shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. I replaced the tranny fluid, and the tranny worked little better, but the problem persists. I pulled a PO756 code, which indicates a malfunction of the #2 shift solenoid.

Today I adjusted the bands. The overdrive band was easy enough, but the adjustment bolt for intermediate band could the turned all the way into tranny housing with almost no torque -- turned it as far as I could but still nothing. Is this a sure sign that the intermediate band is broken/damaged?

I changed the fluid through the tranny cooler lines. In my experience with other cars, I've never seen a the tranny filter or filter screen get plugged up.

Also, I figured I'd drop the pan if there need to be some work done on the valve body.

I'd plan to drop the pan to confirm but can't figure out which filter kit to buy (i.e, deep pan or shallow pan).

Ok, I have 4WD and, therefore deep pan. Thanks for the info.

Loss of second gear and going into 3rd by letting off the gas is a broken intermediate band due to metal fatigue. Its not unheard of. Like other posters said you should have seen some fragments in the pan though.
