Ok so I have a minor problem... I broke the longest bolt off to my water pump when I was changing it. It's one on the far right on the pump. It snapped inside at the threads. How much am I going to have to tear apart to get the threaded section out? Also is it possible to drill/tap for slightly larger bolts? These stock ones seem a bit on the small side.

Oh No!

You have to get the timing cover off now, and sometimes the bolts get a "rust ridge" on the outer side of the cover, which acts like a fastener to hold it against the block. Be prepared.Hopefully the bolt snapped off deeper in.

I'd hesitate drilling out the bolt as it is too near the aluminum timing cover-I would damage this for sure.

You will need to go to ford for new bolts. They are not cheap.

Some areas of the timing cover are pretty thin, I would hesitate to drill and tap for larger bolts until you look this all over real well. Do clean the threads well, and, use lots of anti seize on the threads. In fact, I would run some anti seize up into the holes, several times before covering it all up, if it was me.

Thanks for the great info. You are a god in my eyes when it comes to info like this. When I get time/money to do this job I will let you know how it turns out.

Another quick question... Before I tear it apart, what gaskets should I buy? I want to make sure I have everything together before I tear into this.

i would say just a falpro kit will be just fine with a tube of silicone. i dont know how many miles you have but if you are down that far its only one more step to put a new timing chain in. it is just below the timing cover that you will be removing to get the bolt out anyway.

About a year ago while I was deployed my wife had a mechanic replace the timing set cause the truck had a bad misfire that was tracked down to a sloppy timing chain. The mechanic that did the work on it then had also cross threaded a couple of the bolts, which I found out when I had to replace a faulty water pump about 8-9 months ago.

This time around a bearing had gone bad in the pump so I went ahead and swapped the pump since I have a lifetime warranty with it and this is how I have come to the problem I am having today.

That would be the timing cover set, correct?

LATE UPDATE!!! I got it out with no problem. It was still sticking out from the block about 3/8" and it actually backed out by hand. I think the most annoying part about that whole ordeal was the fact I had to tear everything apart in order to replace that one bolt. Good news also, I got myself a metal rad fan from the local junkyard for $20 with the clutch attached, mine locked up going down the highway.

If your x is your daily drive then be sure to set aside an entire weekend incase you run into minor problems. I split my job over two days, Saturday I tore everything apart, that night I cleaned all the parts I removed. Sunday morning I cleaned the block then re-installed everything. Had myself a minor leak from the thermostat housing cause I didn't put enough rtv on it but that was about it.
