Hello,

I recently purchased a 93 Explorer with a 4.0L engine. I have noticed that when I shut off the explorer after the engine is warmed up, that a stream of 1/4 inch sized air bubbles will flow from the radiator into the coolant recovery tank mounted on the fender well. Is this normal? I put on an new 13lb radiator cap and 195 degree thermostat but that didn't help. The coolant also seems to smell funny to me, maybe like it has exhaust gas in it. Could there be exhaust leaking into the coolant system. Could I have a leaking head gasket or cracked head? There are no external coolant leaks and the explorer seems to consume a small amount of coolant.

Thanks,

Scott

Warped head, blown head gasket, or cracked head

Leak down test that sucker. Does it run hot? Does it idle rough? White smoke in exhaust indicating presence of water? Check condition of hoses and tightness of clamps. Good luck!
