I finally got tired of lugging water jugs up to my apartment, filling ice trays, and waiting for my water to get cold. I decided to find a cheap way to install a cold water dispenser in my refridgerator.

What is it?
This is a system that cools 2.5 gallons of water in your refridgerator and automatically and continuously refills it with tap water when the water level lowers, all for only $30.

How does it work?
It works exactly like your toilet tank. Your toilet tank (the backrest on your toilet) is full of water. When you flush, it uses that storage for the flush. The fill valve, a.k.a. "ball cock", uses a floater to detect a low water level in the tank and then opens a valve to your water source to refill the tank until the floater is at it's apex again. To learn more about your toilet, visit How Toilets Work
I am going to use a toilet ball cock to keep a water container full and always in my refridgerator.

Parts from Home Depot:
Watts ice-maker installation kit w/ 1/4" x 25' polyethylene tubing - $6.97
Fluidmaster 400A fill valve - $6.27
toilet connection tube, 7/8" fill valve x 3/8" female compression x 12" - $3.47
1/4" to 3/8" adapters - $4.03
3-way coupling, 3/8" to 3/8" to 1/4" - $6.98
2.5 gallon container of spring water - $2.49

Those toilet parts are not made for potable water make sure that they dont release any toxic chemicals into your water supply.

This is the cold water valve under my sink. It is a 3/8" compression.

Thread the nut over one end of the plastic tubing, push the metal insert in the end and then pull the nut over it. Don't do the other side of the tubing until after you thread it through a hole into your refridgerator.

Here I used the 3/8" to 3/8" to 1/4" coupling to split the water to my sink and to my cold water dispenser. Don't forget to turn the water off!

I had to use a 2 piece adapter to convert from the 1/4" plastic tubing to the 3/8" toilet tube

Hehe... Genius!

You might want to add an in-line Water Filter so it doesn't taste like... ummm... toilet water. :D

very GHETTO but functional.

Umm don't they make fridges with water dispensers in the door??? We just keep a brita filter pitcher full of water in the fridge and refill from the sink when its low and WALA cold fresh water all the time.

Just messing with ya. You have eliminated a few steps in keeping cold water in the fridge so good for you.

yes, thats the point. me and my roommate go through water like water. even with an industrial sized brita pitcher, we would be refilling it very often, and then after refilling, we still have to wait for it to get cold.

i am working on the in-line brita filter upgrade.
