Im all set to install my new unit this weekend, clarion nx 409
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_020NX409/Clarion-NX409.html?search=clarion+nx409&ssi=0

I'd like to do the install myself (installed quite a few HU, never had a problem) The only thing Im not too keen on is the line for the navigation speed sensor (asking to run wire to reverse light) Is this necessary? I assume its for estimated time of arrival, and average speed.

the other thing is wiring parking brake into unit for "safe" play of dvds when parking brake is engaged. Whats the way around this? Obv I want to play dvds while driving for passenger. Instructions claim if not connected NO video will play ever. Im assuming you attach this wire to another dummy wire that sends the same signal as the parking brake.

If I can't find the answers im going to have to pay someone to install the unit, which I HATE TO DO since I know 90% of the install.

Thanks
E

I just installed a Clarion VX 409 in my 1996 explorer. Check out my cardomain for pictures. The Clarion deck does the job for the price. It gave me bluetooth and IPOD with a full screen DVD, other than that its ........... nothing special.

I don't know about the nav part of wiring.

The DVD in motion can be avoided by hooking the green wire from your HU to a ground and hooking up a switch in line. Basically you put in a DVD and get a blue warning screen and flip the switch back and forth to make it think you are cycling the parking brake.

looks good, how did the unit fit in? No problems?

The radio bezel required dremeling just on the inside of the bezel. Once you have the bezel out and mock it up against your radio you will see what material needs to be removed. Looks like its made for the double din radio in the end.

Yeah Im pulling a dual din out of the xlt so Im hoping it will be a pretty direct fit. Looks like I do actually have to wire to the reverse light either in the rear of the vehicle, or find it under the hood for the nav to work properly.

mmmm not so sure, but wouldn´t the wire to the reverse be to activate an input for a reverse camera, if installed....?? the speed in any gps navigation device is extrapolated from the distance you´ve traveled from point to point detected by the device. Don´t know if this helps.

coppe, thats EXACTLY what I thought and its funny, only the crutchfield instructions mention wiring to the reverse light for gps, the clarion instructions dont say anything about it.

So I connected my harnesses to prep for the install, still not seeing anything about the wire to reverse light, but what coppe said makes perfect sense, needs an activation for a back up camera which is an option with this unit. The only thing holding me back should be the switch installation for the dvd function. Im going to try to hide the switch if possible, im assuming any two way switch will work, one side for ground, the other for the parking brake wire from the HU

YEp im an idiot, the wiring to speed sensor/back up light is for external drives only, didn't read that far into it. Thanks for the help, should be a pretty straightforward install. Made some phone calls today to everyone I knew that had a shop/big garage. Its supposed to be in the teens sunday.....one of my buddies that runs a dealership is opening his detail shop for me to work in, heat, music, grill, cold beer oh yeahhhhhh

when i owned my kenwood KVT unit, i had a single green wire that i was supposed to run to the parking brake. i got to thinking...and i thought to myself well...the parking brake just sends a signal to the unit sayin it's in park, right? so i decided to run that green wire to a spot on my fuse box that was on when the car was on to make the unit *think* it was in park all the time and it worked like a charm. not sure how these clarion units work as i have yet to try one (the next unit i want is a clarion unit actually) but that was my experience. to switch needed
