hey guys ive been looking into this swap pretty much ever since i got the x and found out how the crappy 4406 or 05 i forget which one works. anyway the stone that broke the camels back was yesterday when we were backing my buddys boat down a step bank into the water and it got stuck in 4 low
(and this is after a new shift motor) then as im backing into the driveway it slips out of 4 low and starts grinding in neutral.
so that is where im starting from. from what ive read i can get a bw1354 out of a 1st gen x. I WANT A MANUAL SHIFT FOR SURE. My only problem is that what do i do with the front driveshaft? does the front output shaft on a 1354 have that cv joint thing that is stock on my front drive shaft or do i have to swap the front driveshaft to a ujoint?

If you can find a 1354 manual from a first gen you're good. The driveshafts are different but just get the shaft that matches the case and you'll be fine. You will also avoid a lot of problems with flashing 4wd lights(not a problem, just annoying) if you find a GEM from a 99 V8 explorer as it won't be looking for any input from the t case.(same GEM as a 2wd ex)

Assuming your driveway is paved - don't use 4wd (4HI or 4LO) on the driveway. Doesn't matter which transfer case you have or swap in aftewrads, 440x or 1354, you will end up destroying it.

Easiest way is to use the driveshaft from a 1st gen Explorer.

Easiest way is to use the driveshaft from a 1st gen Explorer.or a 1990-91 Ranger with the double cardan,

When i was backing into the driveway the only thing engaged was the low range the 4wd was turned off on the knob but the motor didnt shift it out of low. And thats what i thought i would have to do. Is there supposed to be some play in that cv joint? Mine makes a clicking noise when turning the ds back and forth? What mods need to be done to the shift linkage before it is installed in the truck? Also i know there are some write ups on this i just couldnt find them can i get a link?

i have found the transfer case!!! gotta go to brooksville sunday to pick up the 3 of them the guy is selling me for 150(pretty good deal i thought)

So now all i need is the gasket between the tranny and xcase.

and the front driveshaft which i found just need to pick it up from the yard.

one last thing tho since my explorer has a live axle is there anything that needs to be done to help the transfer case withstand the front axle spinning all the time? synthetic fluid?

also is it posible to use the shift linkage from a 95 f150 (bw1356 i believe)

Hey guys well i just got a bw1354 instead of the bw1350 i found a ds from a 95 explorer with the double cardan will it work?

Yes - should work.
