Took off my c5 valve body and will try to switch my linkage around tomorrow. Question is, should I put a new valve body gasket on when I put it back, should I really try to find a C4 valve body to use instead, and what are the torque settings for all the bolts? Any technical data/diagrams/schematics pertaining to all this anywhere online? I feel retarded in my searches......

You need to go buy either an ATSG (decent for $20) manual or a ford one (more expensive). They have pics of everything and how to do it.

I woul dnot just stick a valvbe body in one. I would rebuild the entire transmission including the valve body. Look up Glacier911s rebuild diary for somke tips.

Isn't his on the AL4D??

Yes, I am simply trying to show you how some things are done. There are some good tips/tools that apply to all automatic transmissions. If you look at the valve body in his, you will see why I say they need to be rebuilt (very complicated with springs and valves everywhere). They all work the same as far as what the do. One tiny piece of grit in there and you lose gears and can damage parts.

I would never put a transmission in one or any part of a transmission in without a rebuilt or replacment. That up to you though. I tend to spend a lot of money on parts when I do one. Not good for the checkbook, but thats me.

You should also consider that the C5 is about 20 years old. I don't know its history, maybe you pulled if from a running vehicle, but usually they are worn out by this time and have been sitting in a salvage yard for a long time.

I do not have my ATSG C5 book any longer to help there. I gave it to my brother.

To the bookstore/parts store I go to hunt down a book... As for the trans, I need to get the truck on the road asap. The trans did work excellent and had about 80k on it. If she poops, I will rebuild it then. I did read that it was a lot easier to rebuild than the a4ld. :confused:

Its definately a lot easier to do. Tons less parts. The A4LD has around 400 parts. ;eek;
Some fWD transmisssions have over 700 though.

Its cheaper as well. If it was working ok recently, you are probably ok for a while. I cannot say that positively, of course. :)

If you take parts off that have a gasket behind them, I would at least replace the gasket. Thats just insurance against a small tear or pinhole somewhere you didn't see. If you are not going to rebuild the valve body, I would not seperate the two halves. Even a tiny piece of gasket in there might hang a valve up.

Is the part you are trying to swap/modify for the shifting inside the vavle body? I cant get a picture in my head. I hope whatever it is is behind it or something.

Yeah, the shift shaft that goes thru the case into the space behind the valve body. I want to loosen it and rotate the shift shaft so that my shift levers will rotate 180 degrees for that optimal 'a4ld like' position for the cable linkage. I hope it will work tomorrow. We will see....

No books around the local stores... Anyone got the c-5 valve body torque specs???

Just wondering have you ever done this before? here is some specs for a C5 but they are old 83 Ranger B11 Hope this might help. Read some of the specs on rebuilding one and they even talk about making your own tools, like a valve body spring tool.

Rookie: Thats that the C5 was in. They stopped making them in 84, as far as I know. Rumor said that a few very early 85s had some, but I have yet to prove that with my own eyes. Thank you for posting the chart. I gave my C5 and A4LD manuals to my brother, so I no longer have access.

Glad I could help, I got this book on Ebay by Ford titled "1983 Ranger 1984 Bronco 11 Truck Shop Manual" and it is in excellent shape. just pm me if I can help someone with other info. on that year and make.

Hey thanks a lot! One little thing..the valve body is called the 'upper body to lower body, long' and 'upper body to lower body, short' correct? 80-120 inch lbs. should be right..if not, feel free to razz me now.
