Have a 1994 Ford Explorer 5 door. When accelerating between 65 to 78 the car chugs and jerks. I had one of these replaced before and it has corrected the problem but due to a mouse in my car the original paperwork has been lost. Any help would be appreciated. I do remember the mechanic saying that he was surprised that this part went bad because it very rarely malfunctions. I am just that lucky...I think it has gone bad again. However I can't remember which one he said he replaced. Can someone help me narrow it down?

I thought there was only one camshaft position sensor. If it is bad you may be getting a code.

Bigthread,

You are correct....there is only one CAMshaft position sensor. The other is the CRANK position sensor. Two different sensors providing 2 different functions. What I'm asking is, considering the symptoms I described in original posting, which one of them could be causing my problem? I am not getting any code, but the older on board diagnostic capabilities of the 1994 Ford systems are not sophisticated enough to provide an accurate code... if any.

I need someone who has had the same problem to help me narrow down which of the 2 different sensors could be causing my problem. THX!

It would be very hard to narrow it down based solely on the information given. I would probably pull codes from the computer. A faulty CKP would hopefully trigger a PIP or TACH or similar ICM code. A faulty CMP would trigger its own code.
