Camshaft Synchronizer - Need Help

I have a friend who took out his CS. He did not mark anything and is now trying to put it back in. I know it has to go in a certain way and having no markings, I have nothing to go on other than this:

1996 Explorer
6-cylinder
two-wheel drive

Can i get some suggestions on how to get this thing lined back up? I am fairly technical and would really like to help my friend.
