We have just replaced our 1997 engine with an identical 1998 engine, and now we have no speedo, cannot start on the ignition key (so we have rigged up hot-wire starter button), overdrive light is flashing all the time, 4X4 lights flashing all the time, in 'drive' she seems to pull away in 2nd or 3rd, so have to use manual 1st and 2nd and then up to drive, no overdrive (obviously because the light is flashing). The engine runs very good, but these problems are driving us mad!! Anybody got any ideas PLEASE??????
Thanks,
Jan:rolleyes:

Sounds like partially a PATS problem. Need a reprogram possibly?

Was the engine/trans harness swapped with the 97 harness or did you keep the 98 engine harness? Did you swap the ECM's?

If you used the 98 harness & used the 97 ECM, I would think the ECM needs swapped with the one from the 98 donor & getting it flashed. A tuner will also bypass the PATS.

Swapping the engine/trans harness should take care of some (if not all) problems. The pinouts are not the same on the ECM for diff years, and will result in all kinds of problems if the circuits dont mate. You might have to re-wire some circuits from some sensors though. Pats is the reason we don't swap any engine from 98+ into a 95-97 without a tuner or a flash program.

Thank you all so much for your replies. We checked all the connectors today and they are all connected correctly. But doing so, we noticed that some of the wiring colours were different on the harnesses, because no, we did not put the 97 harness wiring together, we put it with the 98. So, tomorrow, we are going to change the complete engine wiring harness over so it is all connected back to the 97 connectors - which was working great. We never had any problems before the engine swap - except for the timing gears breaking up which was the reason for the swap in the first place.
I will post how we get on! Thanks all again.
Jan:)

We have changed over the complete engine wiring harness and now SHE IS WORKING PERFECTLY. Thank you so much for all your help.
