1999 Ford Explorer
Hi.

I have 1999 Ford Explorer that has been converted to LPG.

The Explorer had been in storage for nearly four years. It was serviced and started up first time and I was able to use for the first time this August and really enjoyed driving it.
Can anyone help me. I need to purchase a handbook and also some information on using the Explorer with LPG we used it only with petrol in August Also any recommendations on an AC specialist who would be conversant with the Ford system. We are based when in the UK in the stoke on Trent Area.

I found that when towing my caravan the car appeared to rock up and down, does this show the car needs new shock absorbers.

We will be only using the Explorer during our holidays in the UK.

Regards

Hi
Did you turn off the self-levelling suspension the switch is in the back by the Jack compartment also I found out that it tows better with the overdrive turn off as well after towing my caravan for 5 years in overdrive
hope this helps
Paul

Hi Paul.
Thanks I did not know there was a switch. also how do you switch of overdrive. I really do need to get a owners manual. Any idea where I could purchase one.

Kind regards

Peter

Hi Peter,

The overdrive switch is on the side of the shifter (thumb position) - just press it and you'll get a light up on the dash which means you then won't go into overdrive (though it wouldn't be my preference - it'll cost you an extra 500 or so rpm and the associated fuel!).

The rear compressor switch is in the LH load area compartment where the jack lives.

Try ebay for a manual of failing that, look up Chris Quelch on here - Chris has more Explorers than Ford!!

If there's anything else, just post a question - you're in the right place!!

Hi Paul.

Thanks for your help I will try turning off the self levelling switch when I next drive the Explorer in November. I did not know that was the OD switch. Makes me sound a bit of a fool.

My wife and I do not live in the UK we are in Malaysia coming back to the UK three times a year for holidays.

We had only seen the Explorer by torch light in a hanger where it had been stored for four years. We store our caravan and XJS in the same hangar. We agreed to pay the last six months of storage and it became ours. What condition it was in we did not know. We arranged for a friend to take it to his garage and sort it out. There was not a lot wrong with it. Just a service and a new battery and it passed the MOT.

I like the car very much it has a good feel about it. So we want to keep it. We will only be doing around 4000 miles a year. It will be in undercover storage for nine months of the year.

I have checked E Bay but can not find the explorer hand book how do I may contact with Chris Quelch.

Thanks

Peter

Sorry for this quik reply but in a rush
The car shouldn't be driven with the rear susp turned off. This switch should be used when jacking the car up etc.
Do a search on the reset procedure for the ARC system. recently discussed in this UK section a few times. Basically turn off, jack up and leave for a few mins then lower and turn on. But make sure the load level sensor is still connected from the rear axle to the underside of the chassis. (On the rear o/s of the rear axle).

As for the manual you can find free downloadable PDFs of the american one that will give you most of the info you will need but the fuse locations are different.
