Hello, I would like to know if I can take out my bad -noisey front drive shaft (between transfer case and front diff) and drive without doing damage to the transfer case ect?
I have a 97 explorer xlt with control trac 4wd.
Thanks

Yes, but it sounds like you have a U Joint or two to replace in the front drive shaft. Would only cost about $30 to replace them if you can do them yourself. There not hard to do at all. Plus, then if your rear driveshaft or differential goes out you just through t case into 4 hi and can have front wheel drive explorer.

Theres only one u-joint on the front driveshaft of a 97. It is at the front diff.
The end at the T/case is very similar to a CV joint. (over $200 to replace)

To the OP: Yes, you can remove the front driveshaft with no damage happening to the t/case. (as long as you can resist the temptation of roasting the rear tires)

Thanks alot

Thanks alot to all that replied, it is the expensive part of the front driveshaft that is bad, it is a cv joint looking thing right where it goes into the transfer case.
Thanks again
