Hi everyone, this is my first time posting to the forum but probably my 300th visit! I was hoping for drive guidance on the unique vacuum system that engages the front axles for 95-96 Explorers.

I'm wanting to change the gearing in my '96 Sport. I'm not technical enough to re gear the diffs in it, but it seems like I could just buy a full axle on eBay with the 4.10 gearing I'm after and swap the rear axle / front diff itself.

There are all kinds of postings for front differential units, but most are for the 98 and up year models that don't have the vacuum engaged solenoid system. I can't actually find a 4.10 geared front diff with the solenoid.

So my question is: is there a way for me to modify my setup to disengage 4x4 with the later model front differential? Maybe installing manual hubs?

Thanks everyone. Please let me know if I'm posting this incorrectly.

Yes you can, just swap it in and plug the vacuum lines.

It's that easy? Won't the front axle be permanently engaged with the t-case and put a bunch on wear on it?

Full disclosure- I may be misunderstanding what that solenoid does. The eBay sellers say the front differential will only work on full-time 4x4 Explorers from the 96 year model.

v8 trucks in 96 didn't have the disconnect. All it will do differently is turn the front driveshaft while rollling. Your 2wd/4 auto/ 4low selections will work unchanged.

Sorry, should have specified - mine is a v6; does that change anything?

Thanks for the help man!

Yes I know, I was just stating that the v8 truck of the same year doesn't use it. Just swap in the non-disco one and plug up the hoses, you'll be good to go.

Fantastic! $200 and an easy install beats paying more and trying to regear myself. Thanks a ton!
