Hi everyone,
This is my first post. I have a 1999 Explorer and I plan on removing the auto trans and transfer case. The exhaust has two down pipes passing through two catalytic converters then there is a different type of join for each pipe before the common muffler. One pipe uses a flange which was easy to separate. The other pipe has a
u bolt type clamp which has deformed the outer and I assume the inner pipe making them apparently impossible to separate. Are there any ideas or experienced individuals that know how to separate these pipes?
I prefer not to cut and re-weld if possible.

Thanks,
Mike

"U" style exhaust clamps are not designed to allow exhaust system pipes/pieces to be separated once the clamp has been tightened down. You usually end up having to cut the pipe off.

You can usually find short adapters/repair pieces at most auto parts stores.

Thanks for your response. I'll look for the adapter pieces. Then it's on to the transmission.

When you reinstall your exhaust pieces, it's a good idea to use a "muffler cement" on the joints to prevent leaks. You'll find it in the same area of the auto parts store where you find the pipe repair/adapter pieces.
