You need to crawl underneath to see it easily.. I usually craw under from right behind the passenger side front tire.. Once under there.. slide slightly forward and look straight up..

he is right it is right in your face if you crawl in from behind the passengers front tire. Watch your nuckles when removing it!

The easist way that I have found to get it off is to use an oil filter SOCKET availibe at any car parts store, they have several sizes and they will most fit a 3/8" drive socket with an extention and its cake to get that stupid filter off.

Probable situation-> "engineer- where would be the worse most difficult place to put the oil filter?" second engineer- " I duno how about here, right between the frame rail and most of the engine with about .5 inches on each side of it, he he he."

My thoughts exactly, I ended up denting the oil filter trying to get it off. I ended up having to fill it back up with oil and take it in to get the oil changed. That was the worst placement ever!

I just changed the oil last night.. and found a real easy way to get the filter off. On the first generation Explorer.. if you pull the inner fenderwell off the passenger side.. You can turn the tire and get your hands around it... If you don't have a lift, you will most likely have to pull the tire.. This worked for us since we don't use the inner fenderwell anyway :)

Well, the first time I tried to change the oil filter some years back now on the Ex, I dented it, busted it, got leaked on, swore....before I managed to get it off. I was using the ratchet type mentioned above.
I went to Pep-Boys and bought a mechanic grade oil filter 'pliers'. I know you have seen them. About $20+. After I used it on all 4 vehicles, I threw 5 oil filter 'wrenches' away. I think I had accumulated every kind they make.
This has proven to be one of my most used/borrowed tools I have.
The one think I like about the Explorer filter location is that you can fill it up with oil and not spill any putting it on.
