So my wife and I find ourselves referring to our new Explorer as a truck. But is it? Yeah, we know it's based on a Volvo designed chassis used on Taurus, Flex, and the old Freestyle. But, are we wrong to call it a truck? Just a habit since it appears to be a big SUV, but deep inside it's a car platform with more ground clearance. Do you call it a car or a truck? Just curious.

We call ours "The Whale".

"The Whale" - Now that is fitting!

We Call ours the Tank502 Its our custom license plate . but thats because of an old reference lol

It's not a car but I find myself hesitant to call it a truck. It is also not really a crossover as that is what the Edge would be. SUV would be more appropriate then 'car' or 'mini van' as the uneducated crowd sometimes call it.;) I refer to it mostly as 'my vehicle'.:)
By the way, the Flex platform is what the Lincoln MKT, my previous 'vehicle' is based on. It isn't for the Explorer.

It's not a truck, it's an SUV.

Sure, it's easy to call it an suv, but too many syllables for a quick reference. - "Honey, do you want to take the truck to the beach or the car?" Or "Honey, do you want to take the Sport Utility Vehicle to the beach or the car?" Even S.U.V. is three syllables. Hence the question, truck or car. I won't even suggest tall wagon. lol

I agree more with Mbrooks420. It's an SUV.
You won't find it under 'Trucks' or 'Cars' on the Ford website.

I like the fact it is Unique.. its yours call it what ever the H*&& you want.. LOL.. OR what ever SHE wants LOL... We just call ours the tank.

A while back because of the plate I was called a 'treadhead' Ill take that !!!

According to PA it's a station wagon. If I had to choose between car and truck, I'd probably use car.

According to PA my Expeditions were all station wagons as well but they had a full ladder frame so Id say they were a truck.. happy in ny they are just a passenger vehicle LOL

I'm sure glad they aren't considered trucks.

We often just call it "car" as that is just very universal ... since we do have 2 crossovers.

I called my '99 Ex and my '05 GC 'the truck', but I find myself calling the '13 'the car'. Whether that's carryover because I went back to a car between the Jeep and the Ex, or just because this doesn't feel like a truck, I don't know.

I always say "my truck"... but then again, I'm in Texas ; )

In Florida, the Explorer is referred to as a UT. Not even a UTE!!! Our prior 2015 Explorer was silver and we called it The Silver Bullet. Our 17 Explorer is white gold. Haven't come up with a moniker for this one yet!!!

I just noticed that when I renewed my license plate stickers online that the registration noted the colour as GRY. I guess they don't have a code for White Gold. Not sure where they got the gray from.

Sometimes that'll get flagged on Carfax as 'car color noted as gray'
