So I started working with composites and made a carbon fiber gas cap for the explorer.

I will have a picture up today there are a few flaws but this is the first shot I had at the material and had to use it.

Sounds interesting, I'll be curious to see how it turned out.

What all is involved in the process?

Well i had to remove the gas cap

heat my oven to 350

clean the gas cap

place carbonfiber on cap

let it sit in oven for 3hours

pull out and let cool

now i have put clear gloss on this morning and painted the rest of the cap black for cleaner look im going to sand down the gloss with fine grit paper then ill have a picture to post for you guys

This is a carbon fiber gas cap cap ? ;)

My friend IZwack is building a carbon fiber rock crawler out of metal. Its gonna be pretty sick!

Gas door or what ever not the cap on the tank

Ohhh gotcha, the door -- hehe that makes more sense.

Your attitude remind me of a young Charles Bronson, except not.

u got pics of it

carbon fiber or powder coat????????????? I am confused about the oven part I've worked c.f. and never used oven.

Oven for fast fast curing time (although 350 is rather high). I use a hot box made from a [big] coardboard box with a hole at one end and one of those small 110v small heater doodads aimed at the hole.

makes sense, I was doing hoods so an oven wouldn't have been an option....but I imagine it could save a few hours (given a large kitchen).

There are plenty of drawbacks to curing epoxy too quickly. But for non structural parts, its no big deal.

where can you get the materials to make carbonfiber parts? id like to give it a try.

Ebay :)

so i got this carbon fiber from a friend who makes air plain wings it is heated and takes the shape of the mold

i dont have much use with carbonfiber but this was the correct way to use this product

it is done now

i have painted the rest of the door black and the out side is carbon fiber

Yo soy confused!

So you did the carbon fiber which is just a cover of the original door. Then painted black over it? I'm not seeing the sweet carbon fiber pattern like this. Or is it just bad pictures?
