I did a 5.0 swap in My Mitsubishi Starion. It's super quick, reliable, and runs like a champ. I have another motor and aod tranny that I'm considering throwing into my 96 4.0 xlt that has a blown tranny. Now that I've done it before on an odd application, I figure it would be cake on a truck that comes with a 5.0 anyway. Anyway, I'm just seeing if anyone has done this and if there is any information out there that may clear up some of my questions.
Firstly, I was just curious if anyone thought that would be a decent transmission option (aod), and if not, what tranny is not electronically controlled and would/could work with the stock column shifter. I really don't want to have to cut up my center counsel. I'm also not too knowledgeable about an explorers gauge setup. Would it be easier to get an aftermarket gauge set, or can they be incorporated? Is the speedometer electronic or cable, and which cable or electronics would I need? I'm guessing one from a 5.0 explorer..
I'd also be curious what other electronics would be compromised as well. It's kind of a hotrod truck anyway, so all I really care to retain is the basic necessities like turn signals. Anything else such as audio, domelights, etc is basic stuff I could wire from scratch if needed. I guess I'm just asking what controls what, what I would no longer need, and what could just be left as is.
Also curious about things like the brakes. What (if anything) would need to be changed/adapted for this swap? How about motor mounts? I'm obviously assuming stock 5.0 explorer mounts would bolt right up?
Any insight at all would be helpful. Thank you!
