What could cause the Catalyst I/M monitor not to "ready", yet not cause a CEL or MIL? I hooked a scanner up to my Explorer and the only issue was the catalyst I/M monitor staying in a "not ready" state. No codes and all other monitors were fine. I do have the rear cats removed, but there are no O2 sensors after them. I also have a leak in my header gasket. And I was running with a bad spark plug wire for a while, which I've since replaced, so I was probably running rich .. or.. lean... not sure which, during that time.

I think that is the code which will clear once you have driven 100 miles ( IIRC) without a CEL malfunction-
The I/M not ready tells the" inspector" the codes were recently cleared I think.

It's not a code, my understanding is it's one of the monitor systems that controls the creation of a code. It's supposed to move to a ready state after 1 drive cycle, which I've completed.

it can take more than 1 drive cycle.
it means that not all the sensors have performed all their functions (or something to that affect).

kinda like a P1000 I think.

What it's telling you is the ECM cannot complete all tests necessary to give it a clean bill of health. This is due to all situations it looks for have not been achieved. It's nothing to worry about unless you need to take the car in for emissions testing. It won't pass with that code. (P1000) It will go away after the completion of one drive cycle. But you need to remember...if you miss any one little tiny aspect of that cycle, it's not a complete cycle. I just did mine...it took 3 WEEKS to clear it!! Also remember, any time you disconnect the battery, or disconnect a sensor, and then turn on the key or start it, you have to start all over again. You can also google for the drive cycle procedure. Use Ford's procedure. But even that is hard to do. If you aren't in a hurry, leave everything alone and just drive it a while. It should go away.

Just found out that NC's DMV will pass with a maximum of two monitors not yet in a ready state, so I'm not too worried about it now.

lucky you. We're allowed 0

Same here...

How they heck can they pass with P1000 showing? It hasn't done the tests.

Well I don't know about the P1000, even with the 1 monitor not yet in a ready state, I still have 0 codes. But with only 1 monitor not ready, that still leaves all other tests completed.
