Ok here is what I got going on. Got a stock 02 Ford Explorer XLT 4X4 4.0L automatic with engine code E.

When I am driving and give enough gas to get up to around 2500 RPMs or more I here what sounds like lifter noise but once I drop below 2500 rpms it stops. The exhauts has a foul smell when I get up in the RPMs where the noise happens. Also when I am parked I can red line the tach and get no engine noise but the oder though not as strong is there.

Could it be that the catalytic converters are getting stopped up and causing excess back pressure to cause the noise I here when driving and causing the engine to labor due to lack of flow?

It is entirely possible. You need to have a backpressure test done.
