ok
so when i shift into reverse i get a clang clang under the body of the truck....
i've read numerous posts about the catalytic converter heat sheild coming loose, how do i find out if thats my problem...

do i just get under the X and wiggle the catalytic converter and see if anything is loose to find out if the sheild is loose?

how do i fix it?

thanks guys

it also could be your radius arm bushing.... crawl under there and check it...it will cause a thunk in reverse my 93 did it.... i also zaped my heat sheilds on my cats too

well its not really a thunk its a rattling, i'm sure its coming from something in the exaust, or due to the exaust.....90% sure...but i'll check all possiblities out.

if its the sheild you should be able to hear it while driving....

i dunno, thats why i ask,
it seems that sometimes it depends on how bad its loose? or so is my understanding from the posts i've read

like i said i don't know, acutally i think it does do it when i'm driving, cuz i was at wendys and i heard a slight rattling off the wall,, hhmmm

mine does it like at a steady 3 - 4 grand while pulling. just crawl under there and check it out... theres little tack welds on the cat... youll be able to see em... check to see if some have rusted off.

i see.
being mechanically disabled as i am, hhehehehe i don't know much, but the cats are right before the muffler right?

i'm so lame.haha

yeah there is 2.... at least there is on mine... and there are right up front like inbetween your frame cant miss em... you could try getting some of that steel weld putty and putting in in between there.... i did and it worked... but it smells like butthole when the cat gets hot... till it all drys

arite, they'll be the only thing that is inline with the muffler right?

any suggestions on how to fix it if its loose?

yeah only other thing there besides the muf... if they are loose... you could stop at a local shop/ or if yo uknow some one with a welder and have they tack the sheild real quick... thats all.

cool.
doesn't sound like "TOO" big of a problem...hopfully thats all it is

thanks for the fast replies

Hey 94EB,

I had the same rattling awhile back with the cats (topic seems to have come up a few times lately) and removed both heat shields. Still heard the rattle under heavy load 3-4K rpms. It was a bad U joint so I had them both replaced (very old) for $175 at CarX. Might be the sound you hear. It also stopped a resonance at about 1900 rpm and 70mph on highway.
