Can you see the drive in "my computer" ? Can you hear it spin up?

i can see the icon, but when i put any disc in nothing happens

So if you put in a Music cd the icon does not change to show you there is a disk in the drive and you do not hear the cd spin up?

you are correct

thanks for the help by the way:)

Sounds like a hardware problem, Power/cable maybe, Does the light come on when you place the cd in the tray? Do you run XP if so right click on the cd icon in My comp and run trouble shoot

If you have a cd in the drive and double click on the icon in My Computer, does it pop up a message that says something like "illeagle function call"? I had a problem just as you described, tried everything (software & hardware) without sucess, reformated and the problem hasn't happened since

EDIT (9:38PM): One thing that did work was that if the cd was in the drive when the computer booted, it would recognize that cd, but no cd's placed in aftewards.

many many times

I thought you had, just had to ask. Do you have XP?

yep

I should have known that since you did restore. I have run NT 4.0 for years and just switched to XP. Did you go to My comp and right click on cd drive and use troubleshoot?

Did you go to the HP site and check for a current driver? I know you said you did a rollback but before I went to far I would reload the driver. Hope you get it working.

OK, some wierd coincident or something, I just spent the past hour trying to fix my friend's comp with the same issue. This is what finally worked
First, open up the device manager. Next, expand the dvd/cdrom drives group. Next, right click on the drives and click uninstall. Next, expand the "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" group. Next, you need to right click and uninstall the IDE channel that the cd drive is hooked to. If you haven't changed any hardware than the drive is probably on the secondary channel. (there's some software out there that can tell you what channel it's on, I don't remember where, but I can find it if you aren't sure which channel it's on) Once you've uninstalled the IDE Channel, simply restart the computer and wait till it reinstalls all the drivers.
