Lately when I'm driving on any kind of bumpy road, I'm hearing a noise underneath and the best way to describe is it sounds like there's a chain rattling!

I've looked and everything appears to be tight. I've heard this sound from other Explorers driving by, so is it a common problem?

I've tried search but only come up with timing chain rattles!

if its only on a bumpy road, id check the heat shielding around the cat converters. theyre prone to having a weld fail on them.

Also check under your skid plates if you have any. I tend to get rocks and junk up there but it comes from going 50mph down a dirt road! That will make a loose/rattle sound too.

check the sway bar end links, when they come loose it sounds like a chain is slapping the ground. Mine were really loose and even though i tightened them they still squeak a little.

Rodeo Joe- I am from Milford MA, right next door to you!

might check the dust shields on the brakes too. may want to check your front hubs too.
